He thinks on that a moment, mind tracing back through thoughts and memories of various deaths, his own included. Never once had he or anyone he'd ended had the chance, really, to say something to a person they loved before dying. Life rarely made such a promise. But thinking on it in the reverse, if he had been able to Send to Jacob before the shipwreck had claimed him...

"No, I suppose not. I wouldn't want those I love to doubt my feelings, especially not if I thought I might be running out of time to express them." An oath of love made perfect sense, thought of like that.

He thinks, then, of the doubt in him when Jacob had returned. The fear of time having taken those feelings and muted them. Perhaps he'd been too unkind, even if the logical part of his mind knew it hadn't been an entirely unfounded fear, perhaps he would have held more faith if he'd known. "I'm sorry I didn't know their meaning until now. Our vows are different, I hadn't recognized the sentiment behind it. I wish I had."
